DJ Blaze Set List Saturday Jan 24th 2015

cropped-dragon-glow.jpg

So this set list even has some audio to accompany it! Hip Hop needs to look in the mirror

Ok real talk time, bare with me while I try and make this form some kind of sense

longpost

Mainstream Hip hop is in a sad state of affairs even thou it is probably more popular than ever. I’m going to try and touch on some of the recent issues I’ve see from my own point of view as a Hip Hop lover and as a DJ…

So, this whole Iggy Azalea thing, it has been a hot topic recently and honestly the stupid bitch just keeps digging the whole deeper and pissing more people off. However that being said, she is hardly to blame for doing what she is doing, appropriation and mis-representation of hip hop? Yeah that shit has been happening for a long ass time now, she just happens to be an easy target being a white girl from Aussie and getting accolades at the awards this year, thou we all know those are a total crock of shit anyways so the question really is, why the hell should we care? Why has she become the scape goat? Q-tips history lesson was perfect and on point, however I don’t think that needs to be directly solely at Iggy, and I think the reason he shared it on twitter is because he probably feels the same way, the majority of ‘hip hop’ artists these days need to have a dam good look in the mirror themselves and take Tips words to their own hearts and see just how badly they are representing hip hop culture and representing themselves as African Americans. As Tip said, hip hop has always been political, but not only that, it has been a voice for those who face a system of injustice, repression, isolation etc, it has been a voice for those who struggle to make their voice be heard but somewhere along the way, it lost its political motivation and prowess, it has lost its meaning and became about the money and commercialism, basically, sex, drugs, thug life and violence sells and we have seen almost zero songs making the mainstream that have any real substance (sure there is the occasional track, but they are few and far between)

So let’s first look at women in Hip Hop, who do we have these days? Off the top of my head I can only think of Nicki Minaj and Iggy who are making any lasting impression for women in Hip Hop these days. The problem I have with them is they are often using nothing but their sex appeal to try and sell music (and they all sound like Left Eye) a far cry from back in the day when you had strong female artists like Queen Latifah and Lauren Hill, who stood up for women’s rights and were strong role models for young women and who didn’t use sex or whacky persona’s or fashion images to sell their music (however this is something that has always seemed to have plagued women in Hip Hop and women in general in the music industry) But strong role models this day and age have been sadly lost, and not just with women but also with men as well. These girls do have talent and have some good rhymes (thou I wonder how much of it is ghost written…) but from a mainstream perspective, well yeah, Big Booty, Anaconda? Not much thought put in there, except maybe trying to appeal to the soft core porno scene.

It’s not just how they ‘expose’ and portray themselves but it’s also how they carry themselves and articulate themselves, this is something that is also clearly evident when comparing interviews between artists of the 80’s and 90’s to todays artists, the older artists weren’t as well educated, but they spoke with knowledge and spoke elegantly yet still with that hip hop ‘accent’ you only need to listen to an interview from Lil Wayne or read a Lupe rant to go wtf did he just say, even thou they both are smart, they come across as uneducated and raw and just stupid. As opposed to someone like Krs or Tip (thou J Cole has been dropping some good knowledge and well-articulated to as well as a few others, Macklemore was surprisingly strong too, there are always exceptions) But as for the mainstay artists today, every time I hear them open their mouths, I cringe. But you might ask why this should matter? It does because everyone else wants to copy them, you hear the kind of language influential people say, and you want to use it yourself. When you listen and look at conversations these days by people who are fans of popular hip hop, their conversations are messed up gibberish and it’s reflected by the popular artists who are speaking this rubbish, as opposed to the old skool cats who listened to people who actually spoke well. You only need to look thru social media sites and posts to see people talk almost totally incoherent at times, and it’s even worse when you hear them speak in person

But the trend these days even more so than when hip hop first came out is this invention of new terms and words, coining a new and popular phrase seems almost more important than making a good song. We know hip hop has always had that element about it and once popular phrases and words were ‘coined’ they spread like wildfire and became synonymous with hip hop culture, which leads me into my next point…

The N bomb, and the Black community getting pissed off at other people using it. Now we all know the historical significance the word has, it really is just a dark and horrible word, my problem is, we know how bad the word is, so why are black artists turning it into nothing more than a common catch phrase? So far as to even naming songs with the word in it. Black people (rightly so) get angry when other people use it, however, why aren’t they also angry at themselves for making this word so popular? Sure they have taken the word back and tried to own it, by they have taken that even further and too far. I mean come on, Jay and Kanye – N*****s in Paris?? Now there is a difference when the word was used in storytelling and politically motivated rap, but just talking about spending $$ and shit in a song is clearly just looking for commercial gain and thus using that word in the same fashion. Obviously if a couple of white/brown/asian rappers named a song with that in it, they would be crucified, but its ok for Black rappers to use it for nothing more than commercial gain and then get pissed when people sing along to the song? (aka My N****)

Artists these days have to know that they are representing not only their culture and race but are also responsible for teaching that to other people since for a lot of places around the world, the only exposure they have to that culture is thru what is popular. For hip hop that is obviously in the music and what makes the top 40. Asia is a perfect example here, most countries in Asia have a very limited knowledge of the English language, so their understanding of Hip Hop lyrics is going to be at best, limited and more often than not, totally mis-interpreted. They will also have limited to zero exposure to actual people from different countries and even more limited to black people except those they see on TV… and we already see how the black man or women is portrayed on TV, either by violence in the news or it’s in these hip hop videos. The second thing is, they are going to take words they think are cool and use them, they are going to take catch phrases and lines and use them, and of course the N word is going to be one of them, just like all the bad words, people know they are bad words, but because they are in another language, its ok to them, they don’t know the true meaning behind it, how could they when its used in such a way to be cool, of course they are not going to know that the real meanings of these words have far deeper connotations than those portrayed in the videos and pop culture.

A personal example of this: A friend of mine used it in a conversation, he is Korean, he loves hip hop music but he speaks limited English, enough to converse at a basic level, I asked him if he knew about that word, he said no, I told him a bit about it and why it was a bad word, he was of course shocked to know this, but this case, he is just like millions of other fans out there, hip hop has been dumbed down to more often that not, nothing more than one liners, catch phrases and hooks to reach a worldwide audience and to appeal to the masses but with this dumbing down, also removes the need for people to actually understand the music and the message

This dumbing down of hip hop into nothing more than commercial gain is nothing new to us, it has been happening for a long time, and while the use of the N word is nothing new, even as a title still nothing is changing because $$ talks and people are buying the masses friendly rubbish that we are constantly hearing

This to me really became apparent and was a noticeable turning point when Souljah Boy released his one hit wonder, but you have to give the guy credit, he used the formula and made it work to huge success (just a shame he couldn’t follow it up… like most one hit wonders these days) But the precedent he set has been ruling hip hop these days as most people have followed the same formula. More and more artists are staying away from releasing material of any substance and just going for the radio/club friendly junk that sells, and honestly why not? Money talks, not respect. But therein lays the problem, as is said in many lyrics, it’s all about the money. Which is sad, last year you had Kendrik Lamar basically call everyone out on that control verse, everyone thought it would start a revolution in hip hop, I knew it wouldn’t, it was over almost as fast as it began, a handful of artists tried to release their come backs but it just never gained any traction, mainstream young hip hop artists just ignored it, the old heads did to because it wasn’t aimed at them and they are mostly out of the game now. And even if they didn’t jump on that, with all the negativity that has been going on in the news esp with violence by cops on black people, where is the hip hop communities voice? Why aren’t they speaking out? The older heads spoke out in their time, it’s time for this generation of artists to make their voices heard, they have a huge influence around the world yet they are silent.

And thus we come full circle, It’s this younger generation that needs to step up, the guidance is there if they ask for it I am sure, but they don’t, I am sure Tip would love to have sat down and have a conversation with Iggy, but instead she goes back and insults him, and she isn’t the only one to do this, other artists have also hit out at those trying to support them. Its guys like him who have done this before who people should be looking up to and striving to be like, sure be your own person, but there is a difference between that and what it is people are doing today. Like it or not, they are role models that people look too, their influence is felt all over the world yet very few make good positive use of that influence and it needs to change.

Obviously there is more to these issues and they are more complex than what I have written here, also the music/record companies have a lot to answer for as well, but trying to keep this relatively short and hopefully either spark discussion or at the least spread some awareness

I think Hip Hop’s balance is just way off. We look back to the days when there were an equal or higher number of rappers who did it because it was something they loved and rappers who did it strictly for the money. Nowadays, I feel more people write to get rich and left the artistry behind. If my singular goal is to make all the money I can, why would I care about lyrics and musicality when the people downloading my music just want to hear ratchet music?

This is one of the best reads that I have read in a long time I have had simular feelings on all of this. Another great example of how hip-hop culture has changed is comparing two songs from two different decades on the same subject (cocain). Look at the 1983 hit song White Lines by Grandmaster Melle Mel. That track talks about how cocain destroys people’s lives. Now in 2014 we have this terrible song, that God knows why made the Billboard charts, by O.T. Genesis called CoCo talking about how much he loves cocain and the money he makes by selling it to his comunity.

2014 Review

So, since the FB year in Review this time round completely sucked balls and since I have my own webpage, I feel it’s only natural that I post up my review here 🙂

It’s 2015 already, that came by quickly… In this day and age time really does seem to just fly by, with so much going on in our lives it makes sense So before getting into this year properly, time to reflect on 2014 which was another good year for me and have managed to solidify myself in the DJ scene more and towards the end of the year started working on connections to further myself in 2015. Its all about that ground work! Had plenty of little achievements in 2014 but the main highlights for me were

So those are my highlights for the year, not bad but still need to keep building on them, had a couple of failed and missed opportunities last year but that’s just the way it goes. The failed ones are ones I chose to pull out of, the missed ones, well will be looking at changing those this year, so without further ado, my goals for 2015, these are the end goals, things I hope to achieve by the end of the year, there will be plenty of short term goals in-between, but these are what I ultimately want to achieve this year

– Travel to at least 2 countries this year (possibly more, depends if I can do a tour again this year)

– DJ at UMF and WDF again

– DJ on a big stage at a festival this year

– DJ a main set at one of the big clubs

– Gain a new residency

– Drop to 80-82kg

– Release a mixtape (Major Flavours style) using local artists

– Release a track of my own creation

– Perform a DJ/MC set of my own design (details will come later)

– Learn/Try a new sport (there is a couple I want to try again or pick up properly)

At the end of 2015, I will endeavor to revisit this list and see how much of it I can tick off! I might also add a few more goals to this list, but as of now, this is where my sights are set! Let’s go!

My Holiday to Boracay

So, it’s been awhile since I’ve updated here, it is winter and the holidays have been and gone, so after a month of taking it ‘easy ish’, it’s back to the grind and back to work! But first I guess I should do a quick low down of my trip to Boracay for my short ass winter vacation.

 Passport and Boarding Pass

So, given I have taken a lot of time off DJ’n this year and given I spent a shit load of cash the last few months, I decided to not take any days off this time round, so my holiday window ended up being very small, left Sunday morning, and come back Wednesday evening in time for NYE… Ah how things never quite go to plan. So arriving there, well, the airport was about as bad as the runway, small and ill equipped. My hotel annoyingly was unable to provide a transfer (yet has one leaving the hotel to the airport… go figure) so went with the common option of the tour group/bus (can’t remember their name but it seems everyone uses them, it’s the budget option…) and yeah, really regret that, the trip itself was ok, but the wait for the bus to fill up (an hour) the stop over at some shitty bus stop/cafe (30mins) the pissing around at the port (30-45mins) just killed it for me, esp given the trip going back from the hotel was barely 2 hours, the whole way! This was closer to 5 hours… and it just made me tired, by the time I arrived at the hotel, it was dark and I just wanted to sleep. Got room service, basic food options that were really shit to be honest then crashed.

 Fairways

Next day woke up early and had breakfast. The hotel/resort is a really nice place, has a bunch of villa style buildings housing the rooms scattered on either side of the mountains and golf course and looks very different to the rest of the Island. After breakfast I headed down to D-mall to check out the lay of the land, the beach, restaurants, clubs, shops etc and get some stuff from the supermarket.

Station 2 Boracay

After a few hours walking around it was back to the hotel and a whole afternoon chilling by the pool. One thing I noticed was there was staff, everywhere! It was kind of strange, it even seemed as if their families were there… The next thing I noticed was there was also Koreans, everywhere!!

Fairways Infinity Pool

Anyways the pool was really nice, was windy as hell on the beach but the pool was nicely sheltered, had a feed pool side and just relaxed, even had my towel stolen by a Korean girl who picked up the wrong one… (Even thou it was obvious it wasn’t hers… useless, even the pool side attendant cracked up and shook his head… Korean travelers huh lol) anyways afterwards went back to my room and chilled for a few hours before venturing down to D-mall to grab a feed and check out the nightspots. The feed was good but the service was rubbish with a smile, something I have come to expect in most Asian countries, they mean well but it really is nothing but organized chaos that works to a point, once that point is reached, it falls apart spectacularly. I mean sure, from local restaurants I don’t expect that kind of service you would expect in the west and it’s nice to dine in that more of a relaxed atmosphere but from upscale places that pass themselves off as quality service etc and restaurants at 5 star resorts, I expect a hell of a lot more than I often get. As for the food itself, I did stay away from the local cuisine, mainly because things like big ass steaks were cheap and Phillapino food is best cooked at someones house!

 Steak Feed at Epic

Anyways, the clubs, well it is kind of what you would expect, a smattering of night spots that are half bars, half that student style, loud get drunk with a couple of more ‘up market’ spots and a whole lot of in-between, there was a really nice balance. Most of the DJs were rocking laptops on what often looked like ‘worn’ gear (I can only imagine at how much it costs there to get good gear over there) The skill level was mediocre at best, I didn’t get to hear too many DJs but from what I did hear, I wasn’t impressed, a few were ok, playing out standard residency style sets with just standard mixing, a couple were terrible, jumping all over the place with little thought or effort put in and others were just chilled playing good tunes for the atmosphere. Anyways ended up chillin at one spot for a while and then headed home around 2ish. Good end to a good day.

 Fairways New Coast

The next day I was planning to go wind surfing, and finally managed to head out in the afternoon, the weather was total rubbish but managed to get a good lesson in and get the basics mastered, thou it didn’t help when switched instructors towards the end, the first dude was the owner and obviously knew what he was on about and he just made sense (he was Eastern European, forgot what country he was from) but he had to do some stuff so got given their normal instructor, a Philippino dude… my god, that dude made no sense, at all! Total fail! Anyways, had a good afternoon in what most would say were atrocious conditions (meh like a normal windy Welly day lol) and headed back to grab a feed and chill out at another restaurant, went back to my hotel room, was planning to head out but ended up crashing, thank god I did! Little did I know how much I was going to need that extra sleep energy the following day!!

 NZ Sheep

So my trip home, those who read my FB will already know the story, to make it brief, my flight was at 3.40, got to the airport at 2ish, checked in only to find out my flight had been delayed by oh, only 8 hours… hmm ok I can deal with that, looked around the airport to figure out basically all the flights had been delayed (the weather at this stage was fine… but the day before some idiot slid their plane off the runway closing the airport down) So vip lounge was full, I went across the road and chilled in a cafe all arvo/evening, when time came for my flight, delayed even longer, with no information about it at all, basically it left at 6am in the morning after hours of no information then finally getting a boarding call yet the plane was full when I got on it (guess I missed the Korean only boarding call) then waited another hour while paper work was being done… Seriously, again, shit service with a smile, Kalibo airport was a fucking slum with no one having a clue what was going on and no information being relayed at all. Total bullshit! I could write a lot more but meh, over it now, wouldn’t have minded if it wasn’t for the bullshit way they treated us. Anyways, in the end 26 hours later after leaving my hotel room I finally walked thru my door, missing my set for NYE and I think the first time ever I missed a set like that at the last minute (had a close call once with a flight delay but still made it with hours to spare) So that didn’t really sit well with me either. But at least I made it back and tried to enjoy the last few days of my holiday before going back to the grind.

Stuck in the Airport on NYE

So that’s it, my lovely winter vacation… will be thinking twice before going back to the Philippines again after that experience, basically that is the reason I hate flying on cheap ass airlines to small ass airports!

D’s Horizon: Episode 11 – First Impressions Last

Ok, this has been a longtime coming, I started writing it ages ago, but side tracked by all the big Marvel and DC news of recent, so here it is for this Fall Season…

So with the current climate of shows coming out I have to admit I haven’t been watching as much anime lately, which is kind of sad because there is some good shows this season… but on the flip side there is also some rubbish shows too! Keep in mind I am watching Gotham, AOS, Flash, Arrow and Constantine as well as anime shows. At any rate I have been sticking mostly to my favorite shows so the list is pretty small and now that Halo MCC is finally here, I won’t be picking up too many new shows in the near future unless something is totally outstandingly good! There is a couple I want to watch, fate night stay night is one that looks really good but I want to watch the first series before getting into it. I started watching Terraformars, but I have stopped because I am waiting for the uncensored versions (there is nothing I hate more than censorship) So with that in mind, here is what I am currently watching

One Piece

Sabo

Yes it goes without saying, the best and longest running anime? And we are finally seeing a lot more action, it took a while to build to this point but now that we are there, it is exciting to see the fights as the Straw Hats are beginning to engage head on with Doflamingo and his forces… oh and SABO is back!!! (even thou they still haven’t actually mentioned him by name yet)

Naruto

Minato and Naruto

With the news that the manga is finally coming to an end, the anime is also coming to the end (maybe) of the Ninja war against Madara, I am glad that there is an end point, after this war there isn’t much more they can do except of course for Naruto and Sasuke to sort out who will be Hokage but there is always only so much you can cram into a long story and Naruto’s story is definitely coming to an end. However the war has been pretty good mostly, seeing characters die and the nice reunion of Naruto and Minato has been pleasing.

SAO Season 2

SAO Season 2

So this has been a good run, slightly slower paced that the first season, but also have to bear in mind there isnt a huge amount of material for them to draw from, but what they have done with it has been enjoyable and it felt much better paced this time round

Log Horizon Season 2

Akatsuki

So after the messy first episode, it has settled down now and things are getting a little more interesting, it is good to see some of the raid battles as well as Akutski getting more screen time and looks like she might finally get trained to be more badass. Also story wise there is a lot going on with more and more creeping in so it looks like it will be another great season hopefully

Bahamut Genesis

Bahamut Genesis

So I play the ROB card game, so have been expecting the release of this for some time, and wasn’t disappointed, it is a really good anime, plenty of cross over from the card game for those who play it but done so that if doesn’t matter if you play the game or not, you will still know what is going on. Follows the story of a couple of bounty hunters and a demon who steals one of the stones that is keeping Bahamut prisoned. It is a little jumpy as the world is introduced but the lead characters are very interesting and the opening theme is dope!

Cross Ange

Cross Ange

Ok, this is a weird one, it is most definitely geared towards nerd fan boys who get their rocks off on anime girls, and the whole time it is boarder line, very borderline, but the premise of it isn’t that bad, I mean, gundams, dragons, magic, blood people dying, and then there is the skimpy outfits, girl on girl action and just a whole assortment of wtf moments. This really does take a lot of what people perceive as Japanese anime and just cram it all into a single show

Akame Ga Kill

Akame Ga Kill

Still loving this anime, it’s nice to know that not all the characters are safe at any point in time, while sure it has a lot of problems, overall I am still enjoying it and really like some of the characters and really want to see how it ends

Star Wars Rebels

Star Wars Rebels

I was a little annoyed they cut clone wars off when they did, it was at a rather interesting point, but the show was beginning to suffer thou it did have a solid few seasons and glad that they portrayed Anakin rather well, unlike in the dam movies where they made him a sniveling, whinny little bitch boy (but that’s another story) Anyways the first few episodes are really good, it seems to be set maybe a little bit before New Hope, and has a rather interesting story that I really want to see play out to its end, but I think it’s only a short series so that sucks. The cartoon renditions and even the video games of the Star Wars universe have been on point and the books following the movie series are just awesome! (still disapointed they didnt base the new movies on the Thrawn trilogy)

Avengers Assemble Season 2

Avengers Assemble Season 2

So season one ended with the Cabal being disbanded and Red Skull going cosmic, season 2 has introduced Thanos as the main villain which is interesting since he was missed out of the first series they did (which was pretty good) The first season was not a reboot as such but a different continuation and feels more similar in anime fashion to the Hulk and the agents of SMASH series. Anyways the first season was good so have high hopes for the second season

Terra Formars

Terraformars

Just finished with the 3rd episode of this and is starting to look good. The animation style is that raw desperation feel which by the looks of things is going to suit the show perfectly, thou how roaches can grow from like 5-10cm to being over 10ft tall in a span of 40 years and also genetically change to be smart is a bit of a stretch… but hey, its fiction 🙂 This feels like its going to be another brutal anime on the same level as the likes of Shingeki or Knights of Sidonia. Update: Waiting for uncensored versions to come out so it is on hold for now

World Trigger

The first episode was ok, you get a little bit of the history behind the story and a glimpse of whats going on, but at the moment its hard to get a feel of where it is going to go next, I have a feeling its going to be more story driven than action but that could change hopefully. Update: Dropped this like a bad habbit

Gundam Reconguista in G

gundam reconguista in g

At the moment the first episode barely kept me interested, the animation style is reminiscent of the older style of drawing which while is ok, just doesnt feel right to me when doing a gundam anime esp in this day and age. Luckily the second episode gets better so I will stay with this one for a little longer. Gundam wing for me was by far the best, thou I havent seen them all but most of them. People were excited for this because the hope was it would go back to being more serious (unlike build fighters, a straight child adaptations) and the first episode looks meh but it seems like it gets better – Update: It has hit the back burner but will try and watch it at some stage

And that is it, on the back burner I still want to watch Pyscho-pass season 2, Tokyo Ghoul, Parasyte and Gundam Recognista in G, which I will try to watch at some point but yeah, time time time…

DJ Blaze Set 8: 2006 RnB Mix

So here is another one of my older mixes, I liked how this came out, even thou I did mostly use x-mix versions of the songs but meh, I did this back in 2006 with a lot of the tracks I was spinning at the time and it came out nice so thats all that matters. It is a laid back mix so there is nothing overly technical happening during it, did that on purpose so not to be too distracting. Anyways, here it is plus the track list, enjoy!

Destiny: Thoughts and Impressions

Destiny Title Screen

Note: I wrote this awhile ago, I am prob closer to 30 hours into the game now

So I am about 12 hours into Destiny, yeah you know, that game everyone is going on about, the one that has been highly anticipated for a few years now, that game from the same developers that brought us the Halo franchise, yeah I am sure you know the game and thought I might give my 2 cents on how I am finding the game so far… and yes, as an avid Halo player, there is a lot of Halo influence/feel in this game (not that it’s a bad thing)

Destiny Story

Story Mode
Well to be honest this has kind of taken second string to grinding out my level to catch up with everyone else. The story itself hasn’t been that engaging so far, it is interesting but just feels kind of meh, like it was an afterthought to the game itself, it’s bad enough your character doesn’t actually say anything till a decent way into the story, and the ghost kind of feels a bit like Cortana with its quirks, comments and general attitude. At any rate I have only just reached Mars

Destiny Control

Multiplayer
So the multiplayer system has been set up relatively small scale with the biggest being 6v6 on a domination style playlist. The maps are about medium sized which for 6v6 can be a little barren at times esp the map on the moon and mars, it can take way too long to get into the action (you do have access to your vehicle thou so you have the option of riding that into action). However the maps themselves look very well made, they have a nice flow and thought seems to be have put into how players will handle them, very reminisce of Halo multiplayer maps in their design and execution. The game modes are fun and the level balancing has been done very well meaning if your character is still level 6ish, you’re not at a huge disadvantage going against someone who is level 25 (thou their weapon handling and perks will still be better) It is a lot of fun, however as a fan of big team and epic sized battles, 6v6 on these maps to me just comes up a bit short. And then there is the reward system at the end which is totally random… getting 25 kills and top score with no reward while someone who gets 2 kills, lowest score and gets a legend item… well yeah, that is just infuriating

Destiny Customization

Character
Character creation and customization is always a hard point to talk about, how much is enough and how much is too much, should it be like the Sims or should it just be bare minimal. In destiny it feels like its bare minimal with relatively limited customization even as you progress thru, with your only option really being which armor you end up choosing and some shades you can use to change its color, there might be more but at this point of the game I am basically limited to whatever gear I can find. The 4 different emotes you can do are fun, thou some more variation would be nice too, thou at least they thought that far ahead to add them, but more customization is really needed

DJ Rufio Destiny

Game Mechanics
Now that FPS style games have been around for a while, basic things like screen size, mini maps, hud etc are done pretty well and are standard these days, destiny is no different, jumping in straight away you will find that usual familiarity that you would expect from any FPS. The differences obviously coming from mobility and weapons. Destiny has a few weapon options but not on the scale of COD or BF, but more or less the same as Halo. You have your main weapon classes with a few options in each, but basically you have you standard short, med and long range plus heavy damage dealers, Then you have your skill and perk system, a special skill that can be activated and tweaked depending on your preferences same with perks and each class has 2 different skill and perk sets they can learn and upgrade which can work really well once you upgrade all your skills in that set and choose the ones that work well together (Skills and perks are set together in the same set so you can’t swap them between each set) Using the skills themselves take a little getting used to at first but once you figure out how to best utilize them they can be used to devastating effect. Each weapon itself is also capable of being upgraded to give a bonus perk so this is also a consideration to take into account when choosing your weapons. The weapon handling isn’t too bad, there is enough realism there as far as futuristic weapons go thou at times it feels like there is more than just a little auto aim at play, especially when an enemy is moving, I mean I am good, but at times I wonder am I actually that good to be pulling off some of those more reaction shots that still yield a nice head shot. There is also the auto aim tracker that pisses me off to no end and seems to always be in shooters, that one where your target site will ‘follow’ a target, can be very annoying when you line up a shot and an enemy walks in between, dragging the reticle throwing your shot off. But apart from little things, the game mechanics are what you would expect and feel pretty natural for this type of game

Destiny Crucible

Leveling
The introduction of a Level cap and then a ‘Gear’ level is an interesting one. Basically the level Cap is 20. From there you have light levels which basically means how good your armor is, the more ‘light’ it has, the higher your level will be. Armor from Rare and up has a light value attached to it, the higher the light value, the higher your light level will be. Increasing your level itself from 1 to 20 is a pretty easy task, if you do plenty of bounties and mix your time up between completing them and doing the story mode, you will quickly hit level 20, it took me 10 hours to reach and I am sure a bit of that time was spent in loading screens… yup they do take a while, long enough to notice but not long enough to be too annoying. And once you reach level 20 the grind becomes harder since your are basically dependent on your gear and the only way to get good gear is either leveling up your reputation with each faction or by random loot drops. It is definitely a long haul after you reach level 20 and the way the loot drops and reward system works, it is also extremely frustrating to say the least

Destiny Walker on Patrol

Social Interaction
The game is geared to a degree for social interaction to form fire teams and to go on raids, however it is still lacking with its options for solo players to easily link up with other groups of players. Also the choice to either solo a strike or to form up with a team of individuals is also not there (sure you can join a strike and hope you get matched up with people, but more often than not you just get dropped in solo or half way thru an ongoing strike) having these kinds of choices you would think would be an important factor for a mmo style game like this as there is always a large base of solo players who struggle to enjoy the team dynamics of some of the more difficult content because they can’t get matched up with other players or don’t have enough friends playing. The other thing that bugs me is the limit of players that seems to be apparent when roaming around on Patrol, when destiny was first announced it looked like there was going to be more epic-ness with regards to player numbers and monsters you can come across, but at the moment everything is just so small in scale, most of the public encounters can easily be handled by 1 or 2 players, multiplayer only 6v6, strikes 1-3 players and the single Raid for 6 players…

Destiny DJ Rufio Tower

Extras
Destiny comes with a nice companion app that allows you to look at your progress from either your mobile or tablet and has some pretty good information, also you can track your stats online too

Destiny Companion App

Overall
It is a good game, just not an outstanding game, it feels like a good start but it doesn’t hold the epic-ness I was hoping from it and can see it easily fading into the distance as new games come out. While Bungie has done a nice job here in their post-halo era, for me, the scale of this game is just too small from what I was hoping for on the new generation of consoles, if you can have 64 players running around in BF4, you would expect other FPS games to be able to step into the same realm of share numbers as well, granted BF has been around for a while, but I think this is the kind of approach that needed to be taken with Destiny, or hopefully the system is in place so they can scale it up in the future, but for now, this is what we have, good, but not great

Destiny Loading Screen

Update
So I have finally decided to finish the campaign… meh yeah, that was boring. I am now level 27 and basically the grind for me goes like this, weekly strike, crucible and vanguard bounties and moon and mars farming as well as public events. Not overly exciting at all. It seems most of Destiny is just the focus on getting to level 30 so that you might have a chance of completing the Raid if you can ever find a team

Destiny Tower

Marvel Phase 3… OMG.. But not unexpected

So after the Age of Ultron goodness last week, Marvel at their event yesterday goes and announces their Phase 3 line up, (like an up yours DC) and it is while mostly expected, still dam impressive and has left us with a lot of talking points (to be saved for later)

So here is the line up (Ant Man has been excluded since technically it ends phase 2, thou it really depends how you look at it, it feels like each Avengers Movie signals the end of each phase, but meh, semantics) Also I guessed a couple of them but just didnt get the date right, close enough, interesting to note that we dont see a Hulk movie or an Iron Man 4 (thou Cap Civil War will dub kind of like Iron Man 4)

Captain America 3 Civil War

Captain America: Civil War– 6 May 2016

This will see Cap team up with Iron Man as well as featuring Black Panther… and most likely a lot of others as well!

Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange – 4 November 2016

Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as Dr Strange… Awesome!

Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – 5 May 2017

Gets moved back to this slot, interesting but still, cant wait!

Thor Ragnarok
Thor: Ragnarok – 28 July 2017 (I picked Nov)

Possibly the last return to Asgard, I think we are going to see someone die here

Black Panther
Black Panther – 3 November 2017 (I picked July)

So we are guessing that Andy Serkis is playing the Ulysses Klaw after that Avengers Trailer, and now Chadwick Boseman has been cast as Panther, just gets better and better

Avengers Infinity War
Avengers: Infinity War (Part I) – 4 May 2018

Guessing with the avengers most likely split, this will be all Thanos ripping thru the universe causing total chaos either looking for the gems or with them

Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel – 6 July 2018 (I picked Nov)

And there it is, question is, where and how will she be introduced

Inhumans
Inhumans – 2 November 2018

Awesome, possibly expanding on the GOTG side of the universe more

Thanos Infinity Gauntlet MCU
Avengers: Infinity War (Part II) – 3 May 2019 (I picked this, kinda, if you ignore the first one, I said Avengers movie this day haha)

This movie will likely just include everyone in one big chaotic kick ass finale… FUCK YEAH!!!

So there it is, Phase 3 in all its glory! As I said, plenty of talking points but for now just soak it in… and with that I will leave you with this total bad ass poster!!

Black Panther Concept
