D’s Horizon – Interlude

So I keep starting to write this, but then it gets put aside, something new happens and I’m back to the start again, so Im making the effort to post this up now and hope that nothing else majorly game changing happens between now and when Age of Ultron drops in a months time. Also I think there is going to be plenty of surprises during the movie and that the trailers have held a lot back

Our first proper taste of Ultron came from a leaked trailer which marvel promptly released shortly afterwards which was pretty good on their behalf. The trailer itself was nothing short of awesome, but in true Marvel fashion, left us with nothing but more questions than answers, some awesome action scenes, that epic hulk buster armor, an awesome looking Ultron and all our heroes back in action. The tone of this trailer is pretty dark, and seems like maybe Scarlet Witch is getting inside the Avengers heads and turning them on each other. We dont see Strucker or Vision in the trailer either so there is a big question over where and how they will appear in the movie (along with a zillion other questions as well)

While the trailer was our first real taste, the scene with the Avengers sitting around and trying to lift Thors Hammer was released at comic con (I think it was) and was really a joy to watch (Cap might be almost worthy?!) The avengers have always really shined when its them interacting with each other outside of battle and away from the many ‘world about to end scenarios’ they are constantly faced with, it gives us a chance to really see their personalities shine often to great effect

Fast forward to the news that Spiderman is coming back to the MCU and that at some stage he will be getting his formal onscreen introduction, most likely its too late to see and Easter eggs in Ulton for him, its prob not too late to maybe see a mention in Ant Man, at any rate we will def see him in some form when Civil War hits us next year (you can prob rest assured that there was 2 scripts, one with and one without spidey)

Finally we get the second and third trailers (which are pretty similar, all 3 just add a little bit more each time but essentially its the same stuff), which has a couple of totally epic moments but also importantly shows us a slightly more comedic and fun tone in parts that we are already accustomed too with the avengers, so while this movie will be darker than the first, its good to know that there will still be that ‘comic’ relief and same fun banter between the various team members. We see the first full shot of the Avengers literally jumping into action and also what looks like them fighting alongside scarlet witch in a scene too, oh and also more destruction with Hulk and Stark which easily looks set to be one of the most epic fights to hit the big screen. And finally, we get a short look at Vision and he looks awesome! Again this trailer hasn’t revealed too much and has left us eagerly anticipating the ride that is about to come on us on release date

So, where do things stand at the moment and possible repercussions as well as my picks for what might happen. Well there is plenty of ‘recaps’ floating around out there, this one from cinemablend is quite good so you can jump over there to get the low down on each charater.

http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Avengers-2-What-We-Know-So-Far-About-Age-Ultron-32405-p20.html

But what follows are my picks for what will happen…

Well AOS has been focusing on Inhumans, so I cant imagine any lead up to Ultron, much like when Winter Soldier came out, AOS always reacts rather than set up. You can be sure the AOS part of the MCU will feel the fall out from Ultron and with the way things are going, its going to change the script up totally again (the AOS universe is already headed into a shit storm) and with Hydra already struggling, will Von Strucker survive? I think Hydra is going to take a huge hit again and go back to the shadows to make way for Civil War and then the big battle on a galactic scale with Infinity War being the focus (they wont be gone for ever but they will take a back seat for awhile) This will allow AOS to focus on the 2 diff Shield Organizations as well as inHumans and the Movies will be Civil War and then character build up for infinity war. So for now, bye bye Hyrda

Vission Age OF Ultron

I have no idea how Vision is going to be introduced or even what role he will play, I just hope its well done. Plus he will have the Soul Gem. In the Trailer I almost missed it at first, but Thor mentions that they are meddling in things they could comprehend (funny he is always saying that) plus we see Stark holding that sceptre again… Sceptre, Soul Gem, AI = Vision

Black Panther

I think we will def see either a Black Panther set up thru Wakanda being mentioned or an after credits scene with Panther in it. (Im picking both) You can be sure Ultron will want to go after Vibranium, we know Claw is going to be in the movie, it just seems for certain Panther will get his introduction in some form here

Spidey

Its a long shot but I think there will be some small (very small, maybe a news paper article, or glimpse of a symbol or something) mention of Spiderman, it will be small but I think it will be there

Thanos will show up, I think Loki is set to make an appearance as well, I think both will show up towards the end of the movie, Loki to set things in motion for Thor 3, and Thanos just to show that there is another threat out there (read it somewhere else but possibly Thanos gets introduced thru one of Scarelt Witches visions) greater than they could ever have imagined possibly adding more fuel to the fire for Civil War (could also have some extra back lash into AOS, ill be interested to see how the Inhumans react to Ultron and also lets not forget Daredevil!)

As for Ultron himself, I’m going with this theory, Ultron was a concept devised from Hank Pim but re-invented by Stark. Carter is set to make some small appearance again, but I cant imagine it having any huge bearing, thou I think there will be a flash to Pim and Jan (Ant Man and Wasp) which will set up Ant Man. The Key thing with Ant Man is that it is being set up as someone taking over the mantle of Ant Man. Also after re-watching Iron Man, the end when Nick Fury states that Stark isn’t the only superhero, this is before Thor and Cap, so who else was he referring to exactly? In AOS the index for gifted people is really small but there must have been some other heroes in the shadows previously

I think there might be more information come up for Doctor Strange too, it will be small but something

With the MCU growing every year, the plot threads are becoming more and more intricate which is great and is really forcing fans to take a greater interest in the universal so that they can really appreciate, needless to say Marvel has created a winning formula, so much so I have one last pick Im going to predict now…

Wolverine to Join the MCU and to get teased at the end of Infinity War Part 1 as a post credit reveal! BOOM!

March Update 2015

Ok so it has been awhile between posts, so first up here is an update on things over the last few months…

Missed NYE after being stuck at Kalibo (think I already mentioned that, worst NYE ever!)

nye kalibo

Told by my job that they are picking a new company for the school, so went on a job hunt, in the end I have a job and now finally settled in, its in Eugnam, so pretty handy to home, pay and hours are about the same

Been DJn at Syndrome in their new hip hop zone, as one of 11 DJs on rotation… yes, 11 DJs… needless to say while its been awesome when I do get to play there, been really enjoying it and hopefully will get to play there again, but really, the whole situation behind it is really just a dam mess

Syndrome Syndrome 2

Had 2 and a half week holiday… with little money and no time to plan, I ended up doing the rounds a bit in the clubs and did manage to go to Guam for a few days. Guam was nice, thou ended up taying most of the trip bouncing back and forth between the beach, the pool, the spa and the pool bar/restaurant! However this was the perfect relaxing holiday and just what I needed (basically it was everything that Boracay was meant to be but was not lol)

Guam Sunset Hyatt in Guam Pool In Guam Room Lunch In Guam

Enjoyed a great Waiting day chilling with fellow Kiwis and some good wine!

Waitangi Day

Bar Fly is the same old shit, been a busy few weeks with Uni parties but now back to normal again, still plenty of fuckwits coming late at night, and I swear one of these days someone is going to get more than just thrown out by me (I will post that video up one day)

Bar Fly Madness Bar Fly

The big change with Bar Fly thou is he finally moved the DJ booth downstair, no longer stuck up in the rafters, can finally see and interact with the crowd, so at least not only is it going to make DJn more fun, means I can practice my on stage persona more and jump around like an idiot (since it seems thats what people like fml)

Bar Fly DJ Booth

Booked my next holiday already and have another one planned (depending on certain factors…) but I am finally going to Hong Kong! Been putting it off for awhile now, but decided to finally head there, basically it will be my shopping trip for the year (instead of Tokyo) so headed there the 1st weekend of May for the long weekeknd

Still looking at moving, a few promising apartments have come up so will be checking those out, hopefully I can move in the next month or so to a bigger place and finally get a dog!

Touch is about to start up, the weather is nice so looking forward to getting outside again!

Have a few DJ projects underway, keep an eye out for those (pretty sure I always have something underway lol)

Ill post more about it for D’s Horizon but the TV season has been good, anime season has been so so but a couple of good shows about to come to an end

AND Ultron is almost upon us!!!

What’s next for DJ’s?

So with Naam 2015 finishing up recently, DJs are starting to decide what new goodies they might set their eyes on for their next purchase while others are considering how some of the announcements will affect them but honestly, while there was some key announcements and reveals at this years Naam, overall there was nothing really and truely ground breaking, just a lot of re-inventing of current technology and minor improvements. There is no new feature to revolutionise the way DJs operate, and honestly there hasnt been one for awhile, however with a lot of the new technology that is on the horizon, I think we will see the next revolution happen in the next few years. So this is my thoughts/predictions for what we might see, but before I go into those, lets take a look at the previous big moments in Music history to give us an idea of the things I’m talking about.

Firstly music is music, its something that fundamentally wont change. Music we experience primarily thru listening, thou we can ‘feel’ it and we can ‘experience’ it, these are secondary to the fact that music needs to be listened too to experience it properly (I know with deaf people its another issue, so I am keeping this general here) So while we can add other components to music like visual or social, at its core, music is something listened to, and that is not something you can change. The biggest changes in music history have really come from the different ways people listen to music

So with this in mind, lets have a look at the history of music ‘technology’

1. Music notation (the first big music revolution) – music represented in written format, allowed people to recreate tunes

music notation

2. Recorded music (the second big music revolution) – allowed people to record sound to be listened to at a later time

vinyl

3. Telephones – allowed sound to be shared across great distances

telephone

4. Radio – sound and music being shared over radio waves removing the need for having a physical copy of the music (eg a vinyl recording)

radio

5. Tape – the change from vibration based recordings to storing music infomation as magnetic infomation, reducing the size required to store a lot of sound

tape

6. The Walkman – portable music in a smaller user friendly size (sure boomboxes could also come under this category, but it was the smaller size that counts here)

walkman

7. Digital (the third big music revolution) – This changed everything, being able to store music as digital infomation rather than analogue, this was a huge stepping stone in not only the musical world but in the world in general

digital music

8. CDs – before now, music was often played especially by djs on vinyl, tapes were often over-looked as a medium for DJs because of their impracticality for live performances and music manipulation. CDs changed the way we consumed music once again. CDs allowed people to burn their own CDs, unlike the vinyl era when printing vinyl was extremely expensive, being able to burn CDs from the comfort of home changed the way we listened to music, no longer being bound to listening to a whole album, people could burn their own compliations. Also CDs not only reduced the size of recorded music but also preceded the inovations to come with CD players made for DJs allowing them to manipulate music in ways not previously possible with the pinnacle of this technology being the CDJ

cd

9. MP3 – As with CDs before paving the way for the creation of tools to be able to manipulate music live from a digital perspective, mp3 allowed music to be stored in sizes smaller than previously seen, this was important because comupters at the time were limited with disc space (both at home and online storing) and internet transfers of music was limited to slow dial up connections at expensive costs. Mp3 allowed the explosion of music sharing and also at the same time, Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) started sprining up allowing the average person access to the tools to manipulate and produce their own music without the need for expensive studios. Mention must go to napster for starting up the music piracy era which rocked the music industry again in the way people obtain their music

mp3

10. Streaming – The change from the traditional TV and radio broadcasting of music, streaming bought the option to the digital world, allowing content to be shared in real time to people across the globe. With streaming also came the reduced sizes in media while still maintaining quality (Youtube being the big one here, but now we have multiple options for streaming)

streaming

11. DVS systems – While this is a mere combination of the technology before it, it is a combination that has opened up the DJ industry and allowed it to truely expand. From Serato to Rekordbox and many inbetween, these systems allow music to be played and manipulated using a laptop controlled by different control surfaces or the removal of a computer completely and only needing a hard drive has changed the way DJs work and think. With thousands of songs now being able to be stored on a device no bigger than an eraser, music is more accessible than ever before. Also DVS systems have allowed for portable DJ options from small midi controllers to mobile/tablet DJ options being more than  just viable

serato

And thus we come to point where we currently are in the DJ world, while we have come a long way, the next step I think is where things really get interesting, so lets take a look at what could be on the horizon…

Google glass & Microsofts holo lens

google glass

While the technology is still bulky, once it slims down, I can see this as being a viable interface for DJs, imagine having waveforms in your heads up display, or track search using a holo representation of your record box, browsing songs with a swipe of a finger and loading them the same way. We have already seen some touch screen implementation of DJ technology, but it still doesnt quite replace the need to be able to feel what you are doing, however the extra add on esp with holo technology could lead to some really exciting creations and inovations. Or the reverse could also happen, we already have silent discos, imagine the crowd also having holo lens and recreating the whole club environment and expeirence, even allowing the dj to have direct feed back with the crowd via things like holo statuses above peoples heads (just like nightclub city) or you could totally redecorate the club environment digitally (just like in psycho pass)

holo lens

Holograms – Singers back from the dead or performing at mulitple locations simultaneously

hologram

So we already had holo pac, how about creating a dj show filled with holographic singers and performers controlled by the dj, the concept isnt as far off as the technology develops further. Or even have a DJ streamed at multiple locations via hologram

Virtual Reality – How about a virtual club

virtual reality

So we already know virtual reality is charging foward and is set to be the next big evoulton in technology, this could lead to virtual clubs, we already have things like livestreaming creating a kind of virtual club feel, virtual hangouts and livestream chat parties etc, the next step would of course be people being able to virtually go to a concert or club and share in the experience.

As far as virtual reality goes, I still think the big eventual step will be full imersion VR (ala Sword Art or Matrix) which would not only change the club world but also the world as we know it. When technology reaches this state thou, things will be vastly different than they are now. But at the current state, being able to wear something like Oculus rift and have yourself emerged inside a club isn’t as unbelievable as it once was

Voice commands vs gesture controls

kinect

While voice command software is nothing new, it hasnt taken off as much as people would hope, I think the reason for that is there is  a lot of people out there who dont feel comfortable using thier voice, plain and simple, its a common personality trait, also using voice control in the DJ world, well yeah, its just totally impractical given the loud environment we work in, however, gesture control is a totally different story esp given that big name DJs use gestures all the time to control the crowd. While touch screens are flaunted in clubs, they are merely the begining of the posibillities, things like the Nod – buetooth gesture control ring or Mota Smart Ring can be used to track your gestures (or even technology like Xbox Kinect to track the whole area behind the DJ booth), imagine linking the motion of raising your arms to an audio effect, while seemingly simple, this is something that hasnt really been explored mostly because of the lag and unpredictable nature of wireless connections esp in a live performance environment, however, as wirless techonlogy becomes more stable and reliable, things like gesture control can become much more practical, imagine standing back from the DJ Booth or doing a Steve Aoki in front of the corwd and using a ring or watch to trigger the effect and controlling it using your hands away from the booth. It can make for some great crowd interactions and show possibilities. While the technology is there, the reliablitly is yet to catch up.

Carrying on with the wireless connection advancements that are surely to happen and once they do make it more stable, it also opens up the use of things like Ownphones/Earin – new earphone designs that can be worn as in ears and are totally wireless. Removing the need for cables is a big thing in the DJ world because we are often surrounded by the mess of cables everywhere connecting all the various parts and pieces, a switch into wireless connectivity is a wish of many DJs to help clean up the booths

There will of course be many other advances to come out that will make DJs lives easier, things from smart luggage to smaller PCs, use of mobile systems to fully replace the need for a PC, touch screens, smarter controls, better sound quality, increased storage space etc. While all these advancements will be good for the DJ world, they are hardly revolutionary, merely things to make life easier. I truely believe the next big revolution that will hit the DJn world is virtual reality with the precursors to it being holographic and heads up display technology paving the way. Thoughts?

Spidey comes home!

Spidey MCU

Now people will remember back to last year when talks were leaked between Marvel and Sony about Marvel bringing Spidey back into the MCU and that at first it seemed like the idea might fly but was in the end initially given up on because the respective partners couldnt come to terms. (Latino Review had some good stuff on it and here was a nice sum up done by ign and another one here. Also Badassdigest had plenty on it too) However while fans were lamenting, people over looked an important fact, it wasnt Sony as a whole negotiating, it was only a small part. Long story short, those who read thru the reports properly noticed that the major heads of Sony were not happy with how Spiderman was being used and its comparative failure in the box office and that those heads were due to meet in Jan and you can sure bet that Spiderman would be somewhere on their agenda.

I told my friends to wait till Jan, the deal isn’t dead yet

Fast forward to January and rumors began flying again, Latino Review once again keeping us on edge with more rumors and what appears to be either leaked plots or well thought out guesstimations.

And then it happened, finally, Spidey, has come back, to the M. C. U….. (well you know what I mean)

Here is the link to the official Marvel News announcement page, needless to say the internet has been blowing up about the news and everyone is happy that they finally managed to make the deal! Yeah yeah!! But now, the questions start coming in of just how will they bring Spidey into the MCU and what roll will he play, who will play him, will he be a rebooted? The answer to those questions will come soon enough, but for now, lets just bask in the fact Spidey is back where he belongs

(and as a side note, this deal might mean good news for other Marvels franchises not with Marvel eg. Fantastic Four and X-men, while not likely anytime soon, this deal proves that anything can happen and that fan service for the most part still has meaning to the studios, while I doubt they will make an appearance in this current golden age of comic movies, who knows what will happen after infinty war)

D’s Horizon: Episode 12 – Mid Season is over

I know its been awhile between posts, but with this cold ass weather it is easy to be distracted but I’m back to writing again and thought since I have been watching mostly TV shows the last few months, it would be a good chance to post up some mid-season finale reviews/thoughts esp now that most of the shows are back on from the Xmas hiatus. Thou the whole mid-season thing is a little annoying but I guess with Xmas it does make sense since TV programming basically goes to hell over this period. Anways, it has been a good TV season, which makes up for the average ish Anime season even after I was all hyped for it, ill cover anime next time once I do some catching up during my break in the following weeks.

On a side note, I did watch the whole series of ‘Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire’ which was very good, but my god, nothing like greedy mofos to screw up a good thing! Might touch on that in another post at some stage as well.

So, onto the reviews and ill start with the surprise stand out

Constantine

This had me hooked from the get go, the movie wasn’t bad, Keanu did a good job of playing Constantine, not having much knowledge of him before that I found it interesting and a good movie, not great but good, however this new rendition is just awesome, the casting of Constantine even again without knowing the comics just works so beautifully and the rawness of the show leads to some brutal moments both visually and emotionally. The show centers around Constantine as he comes out of a self-exile situation to battle the rising darkness while also coming to terms with a past and conscious that is screwed up at best. Each episode is a stand-alone type of thing while building towards the bigger picture and it just works, I can’t really praise it enough. The mythology used is well thought out and puts a nice spin on things. The finale ended up with a cliffhanger and a bit more clarity on things while still leaving a lot to come. The betrayal was a bit set up but worked all the same and it’s nice to see him finally come up against something he has no idea how to handle. Can’t wait for it to start back up again

Constantine

Arrow

The season started off annoyingly ‘cryptic’ for lack of a better word, while things kinda just kept going, we were without a real driving force, a villain, after Death Stroke was ‘removed’ we were eagerly waiting for a new villain, knowing that they wouldn’t use Merlin again and finally towards the end we learned it would indeed be Raus Al Gould who was splendid in the mid-season finale handing Oliver’s ass to him and looks like paving the way for a supernatural element to finally hit properly in the show (the Mericual drug while factious, still has some scientific relevance… ish) The season really did shine with the last few episodes, first with the crossover with Flash which was a hell of a lot of fun (Diggle’s reaction is priceless) and then the Finale with Ras. Arrow looks to be back on track while also appearing to set itself up to add to its roster finally of good guys, hopefully giving a greater dynamic for the show. Can’t wait to see this play out as well as more crossovers

 Arrow Flash

Flash

This keeps going from strength to strength while also giving us a whole heap of just what the fuck is going on with Well’s moments, even the ‘reveal’ in the finale was more of a mind fuck than a reveal because it didn’t actually answer anything and leaves us with even more questions. I must admit the whole love story thing gets annoying at times but I guess they need to throw that shit in there to keep the mushy audience happy… at least I hope that’s their reason, I mean yes in the context of the story it is needed but sometimes the focus of it is just, I don’t know, too much? Anyways, Flash looks awesome and his attitude is just about perfect, the villains have been good to. They have done well in capturing flashes universe here, makes me wonder just how they will go with the Flash Movie and Justice League… I am really hoping they don’t fuck it up…

 Flash

Walking Dead

Well, way to kill someone off in an annoying manner, it just didn’t make sense… but the reactions were gold. The show really does have its great moments mixed up with um really, you could have done better moments. The Eugine reveal is an interesting one, at the same time also annoying, sure, the show is about survival, but finally this season they start to ask, survival for what? To what end? And as I have said before, where is the end game, sure a show about survival is cool, but to keep people really interested and guessing you are going to need some kind of build up to something, not just every time they find a safe haven, a new way to fuck it up so they have to hit the road again. Now I know this is a little tricky since the comics are far ahead and they draw from that, and since I have made effort not to read them (thou I am really tempted to and prob will end up doing so) this is just speculation from a fan in that position. But I really want some kind of end game or some kind of at least more of a forward thinking from them to find a proper safe haven, my guess is they head to Washington where there is likely going to be some kind of ‘haven’ but if it was me, I would be headed the other way to the Caribbean and hitting up the Islands there, if you could clear out an Island, you would be pretty much safe and could establish a colony there with little trouble… Might elaborate more on that in a future post with a ‘What I would do in a zombie apocalypse’

 Walking Dead

Gotham

While we were forced feed a bit at the start, the show has really settled down into a good cop show, Penguin is a stand out, his character is so well done, Gordan as well, the introduction of Dent was interesting, again felt forced but apart from some of those ambiguities, the show is interesting and provides an interesting insight into Gotham, Gordan and importantly, Bruce, seeing how he might have become Batman from his younger years after his parents murder is interesting as we often see him, not much of his origin story, sure Nolan gave us one but the focus was still later on, the shift of focus to his childhood is a newer take (I think one of the comics did this as well?) and combine that with origins for all the villains as well from a similar perspective provides us with a great show so far. Anyways, the show has left us in an interesting place as plots are starting to take shape as well as various relationships and political motives/agendas are forming as well. They have rammed a lot in over a short time

 Gotham

Finally, my favourite, esp with Ultron on the way…

Shield

Ok so firstly, was excited to learn Lawless was going to be in the show… But um fail, she was dead after the first Episode. That aside, Shield kicked off right where the first season left it, in a very interesting place and going full steam ahead, sure the first half of season one was a set up and it was important because now we just have a show set up in a great universe that has endless possibilities. So to get the obvious out of the way, Skye is an Inhuman, the Alien tech was Kree, Hydra is all over the place, Is Whitehall really dead, Ward is much better as a love puppy bad guy, Skye is finally a badass, May was always a badass, The Fitz/Simmons thing was almost perfectly done and Coulson has his mind back, kinda, and they Killed Trip?! So the mid-season finale… Has gone into setting up the Inhumans for the MCU and has also made the Kree connection to earth, basically linking up a lot of things. The questions to be seen are, what will Age of Ultron change? (Obviously everything, again!) Will the story focus on Inhuman’s more? Will Shield still be around? How is Civil War going to affect the landscape once again?! Is Skye going to have superpowers? Will Ms Marvel come from Shield or will she come from the GOTG side of the universe? Will they touch on Daredevil and give it an intro of sorts? Honestly anything Marvel does at the moment is right on the money, sure, it has its holes, but meh, does care! This is the golden age of superhero movies, best to enjoy it!

HENRY SIMMONS, IAIN DE CAESTECKER, ELIZABETH HENSTRIDGE, CLARK GREGG

Add on…

Agent Carter

So filling in the Marvel TV void till Shield comes back on, we have Agent Carter, set after World War 2, we find Pegy back in New York working for the SSR, removed from her rank and position in the war to that of a female agent living in a time where female rights were at best revolved around a woman should know her place, Carter is set in an interesting time and shows her struggles to adapt after the war and to fit back in to a world dominated by men even thou she is more than competent. The introduction of Jarvis and his relationship with Carter is brilliant, esp the contrast between her being a badass and him trying to be a proper ‘gentleman’. Howard Stark is also interesting as a character, with all his own scheming. The show is just starting out but already it is enjoyable. It will be interesting to see where they take the show, we know that Carter and Stark and instrumental with the founding of Shield, but we also know that Shield is infiltrated early on by Hydra, maybe even co-founded by agents whose loyalties are secretly with Hydra, making for some interesting spy drama. The other thing I am interested in is, will we see Hank Pim at some stage during the Carter series, we know that when Ant Man comes out, he is older and giving up the ‘Ant Man’ persona

Agent Carter

DJ Blaze Set List Saturday Jan 24th 2015

cropped-dragon-glow.jpg

So this set list even has some audio to accompany it! Yeah I decided to record the first part of it since it was a very slow night, so ended up playing a ‘house’ set to begin with, thou after 40mins in, it picked up really quickly so switched from chill mode to party mode and stopped recording (wanted a nice house set on file) Also didn’t even play a hip hop set that night so kinda why the numbers of tracks are down from my normal

Hip Hop needs to look in the mirror

Ok real talk time, bare with me while I try and make this form some kind of sense

longpost

Mainstream Hip hop is in a sad state of affairs even thou it is probably more popular than ever. I’m going to try and touch on some of the recent issues I’ve see from my own point of view as a Hip Hop lover and as a DJ…

So, this whole Iggy Azalea thing, it has been a hot topic recently and honestly the stupid bitch just keeps digging the whole deeper and pissing more people off. However that being said, she is hardly to blame for doing what she is doing, appropriation and mis-representation of hip hop? Yeah that shit has been happening for a long ass time now, she just happens to be an easy target being a white girl from Aussie and getting accolades at the awards this year, thou we all know those are a total crock of shit anyways so the question really is, why the hell should we care? Why has she become the scape goat? Q-tips history lesson was perfect and on point, however I don’t think that needs to be directly solely at Iggy, and I think the reason he shared it on twitter is because he probably feels the same way, the majority of ‘hip hop’ artists these days need to have a dam good look in the mirror themselves and take Tips words to their own hearts and see just how badly they are representing hip hop culture and representing themselves as African Americans. As Tip said, hip hop has always been political, but not only that, it has been a voice for those who face a system of injustice, repression, isolation etc, it has been a voice for those who struggle to make their voice be heard but somewhere along the way, it lost its political motivation and prowess, it has lost its meaning and became about the money and commercialism, basically, sex, drugs, thug life and violence sells and we have seen almost zero songs making the mainstream that have any real substance (sure there is the occasional track, but they are few and far between)

So let’s first look at women in Hip Hop, who do we have these days? Off the top of my head I can only think of Nicki Minaj and Iggy who are making any lasting impression for women in Hip Hop these days. The problem I have with them is they are often using nothing but their sex appeal to try and sell music (and they all sound like Left Eye) a far cry from back in the day when you had strong female artists like Queen Latifah and Lauren Hill, who stood up for women’s rights and were strong role models for young women and who didn’t use sex or whacky persona’s or fashion images to sell their music (however this is something that has always seemed to have plagued women in Hip Hop and women in general in the music industry) But strong role models this day and age have been sadly lost, and not just with women but also with men as well. These girls do have talent and have some good rhymes (thou I wonder how much of it is ghost written…) but from a mainstream perspective, well yeah, Big Booty, Anaconda? Not much thought put in there, except maybe trying to appeal to the soft core porno scene.

It’s not just how they ‘expose’ and portray themselves but it’s also how they carry themselves and articulate themselves, this is something that is also clearly evident when comparing interviews between artists of the 80’s and 90’s to todays artists, the older artists weren’t as well educated, but they spoke with knowledge and spoke elegantly yet still with that hip hop ‘accent’ you only need to listen to an interview from Lil Wayne or read a Lupe rant to go wtf did he just say, even thou they both are smart, they come across as uneducated and raw and just stupid. As opposed to someone like Krs or Tip (thou J Cole has been dropping some good knowledge and well-articulated to as well as a few others, Macklemore was surprisingly strong too, there are always exceptions) But as for the mainstay artists today, every time I hear them open their mouths, I cringe. But you might ask why this should matter? It does because everyone else wants to copy them, you hear the kind of language influential people say, and you want to use it yourself. When you listen and look at conversations these days by people who are fans of popular hip hop, their conversations are messed up gibberish and it’s reflected by the popular artists who are speaking this rubbish, as opposed to the old skool cats who listened to people who actually spoke well. You only need to look thru social media sites and posts to see people talk almost totally incoherent at times, and it’s even worse when you hear them speak in person

But the trend these days even more so than when hip hop first came out is this invention of new terms and words, coining a new and popular phrase seems almost more important than making a good song. We know hip hop has always had that element about it and once popular phrases and words were ‘coined’ they spread like wildfire and became synonymous with hip hop culture, which leads me into my next point…

The N bomb, and the Black community getting pissed off at other people using it. Now we all know the historical significance the word has, it really is just a dark and horrible word, my problem is, we know how bad the word is, so why are black artists turning it into nothing more than a common catch phrase? So far as to even naming songs with the word in it. Black people (rightly so) get angry when other people use it, however, why aren’t they also angry at themselves for making this word so popular? Sure they have taken the word back and tried to own it, by they have taken that even further and too far. I mean come on, Jay and Kanye – N*****s in Paris?? Now there is a difference when the word was used in storytelling and politically motivated rap, but just talking about spending $$ and shit in a song is clearly just looking for commercial gain and thus using that word in the same fashion. Obviously if a couple of white/brown/asian rappers named a song with that in it, they would be crucified, but its ok for Black rappers to use it for nothing more than commercial gain and then get pissed when people sing along to the song? (aka My N****)

Artists these days have to know that they are representing not only their culture and race but are also responsible for teaching that to other people since for a lot of places around the world, the only exposure they have to that culture is thru what is popular. For hip hop that is obviously in the music and what makes the top 40. Asia is a perfect example here, most countries in Asia have a very limited knowledge of the English language, so their understanding of Hip Hop lyrics is going to be at best, limited and more often than not, totally mis-interpreted. They will also have limited to zero exposure to actual people from different countries and even more limited to black people except those they see on TV… and we already see how the black man or women is portrayed on TV, either by violence in the news or it’s in these hip hop videos. The second thing is, they are going to take words they think are cool and use them, they are going to take catch phrases and lines and use them, and of course the N word is going to be one of them, just like all the bad words, people know they are bad words, but because they are in another language, its ok to them, they don’t know the true meaning behind it, how could they when its used in such a way to be cool, of course they are not going to know that the real meanings of these words have far deeper connotations than those portrayed in the videos and pop culture.

A personal example of this: A friend of mine used it in a conversation, he is Korean, he loves hip hop music but he speaks limited English, enough to converse at a basic level, I asked him if he knew about that word, he said no, I told him a bit about it and why it was a bad word, he was of course shocked to know this, but this case, he is just like millions of other fans out there, hip hop has been dumbed down to more often that not, nothing more than one liners, catch phrases and hooks to reach a worldwide audience and to appeal to the masses but with this dumbing down, also removes the need for people to actually understand the music and the message

This dumbing down of hip hop into nothing more than commercial gain is nothing new to us, it has been happening for a long time, and while the use of the N word is nothing new, even as a title still nothing is changing because $$ talks and people are buying the masses friendly rubbish that we are constantly hearing

This to me really became apparent and was a noticeable turning point when Souljah Boy released his one hit wonder, but you have to give the guy credit, he used the formula and made it work to huge success (just a shame he couldn’t follow it up… like most one hit wonders these days) But the precedent he set has been ruling hip hop these days as most people have followed the same formula. More and more artists are staying away from releasing material of any substance and just going for the radio/club friendly junk that sells, and honestly why not? Money talks, not respect. But therein lays the problem, as is said in many lyrics, it’s all about the money. Which is sad, last year you had Kendrik Lamar basically call everyone out on that control verse, everyone thought it would start a revolution in hip hop, I knew it wouldn’t, it was over almost as fast as it began, a handful of artists tried to release their come backs but it just never gained any traction, mainstream young hip hop artists just ignored it, the old heads did to because it wasn’t aimed at them and they are mostly out of the game now. And even if they didn’t jump on that, with all the negativity that has been going on in the news esp with violence by cops on black people, where is the hip hop communities voice? Why aren’t they speaking out? The older heads spoke out in their time, it’s time for this generation of artists to make their voices heard, they have a huge influence around the world yet they are silent.

And thus we come full circle, It’s this younger generation that needs to step up, the guidance is there if they ask for it I am sure, but they don’t, I am sure Tip would love to have sat down and have a conversation with Iggy, but instead she goes back and insults him, and she isn’t the only one to do this, other artists have also hit out at those trying to support them. Its guys like him who have done this before who people should be looking up to and striving to be like, sure be your own person, but there is a difference between that and what it is people are doing today. Like it or not, they are role models that people look too, their influence is felt all over the world yet very few make good positive use of that influence and it needs to change.

Obviously there is more to these issues and they are more complex than what I have written here, also the music/record companies have a lot to answer for as well, but trying to keep this relatively short and hopefully either spark discussion or at the least spread some awareness

I think Hip Hop’s balance is just way off. We look back to the days when there were an equal or higher number of rappers who did it because it was something they loved and rappers who did it strictly for the money. Nowadays, I feel more people write to get rich and left the artistry behind. If my singular goal is to make all the money I can, why would I care about lyrics and musicality when the people downloading my music just want to hear ratchet music?

This is one of the best reads that I have read in a long time I have had simular feelings on all of this. Another great example of how hip-hop culture has changed is comparing two songs from two different decades on the same subject (cocain). Look at the 1983 hit song White Lines by Grandmaster Melle Mel. That track talks about how cocain destroys people’s lives. Now in 2014 we have this terrible song, that God knows why made the Billboard charts, by O.T. Genesis called CoCo talking about how much he loves cocain and the money he makes by selling it to his comunity.

2014 Review

So, since the FB year in Review this time round completely sucked balls and since I have my own webpage, I feel it’s only natural that I post up my review here 🙂

It’s 2015 already, that came by quickly… In this day and age time really does seem to just fly by, with so much going on in our lives it makes sense So before getting into this year properly, time to reflect on 2014 which was another good year for me and have managed to solidify myself in the DJ scene more and towards the end of the year started working on connections to further myself in 2015. Its all about that ground work! Had plenty of little achievements in 2014 but the main highlights for me were

So those are my highlights for the year, not bad but still need to keep building on them, had a couple of failed and missed opportunities last year but that’s just the way it goes. The failed ones are ones I chose to pull out of, the missed ones, well will be looking at changing those this year, so without further ado, my goals for 2015, these are the end goals, things I hope to achieve by the end of the year, there will be plenty of short term goals in-between, but these are what I ultimately want to achieve this year

– Travel to at least 2 countries this year (possibly more, depends if I can do a tour again this year)

– DJ at UMF and WDF again

– DJ on a big stage at a festival this year

– DJ a main set at one of the big clubs

– Gain a new residency

– Drop to 80-82kg

– Release a mixtape (Major Flavours style) using local artists

– Release a track of my own creation

– Perform a DJ/MC set of my own design (details will come later)

– Learn/Try a new sport (there is a couple I want to try again or pick up properly)

At the end of 2015, I will endeavor to revisit this list and see how much of it I can tick off! I might also add a few more goals to this list, but as of now, this is where my sights are set! Let’s go!

My Holiday to Boracay

So, it’s been awhile since I’ve updated here, it is winter and the holidays have been and gone, so after a month of taking it ‘easy ish’, it’s back to the grind and back to work! But first I guess I should do a quick low down of my trip to Boracay for my short ass winter vacation.

 Passport and Boarding Pass

So, given I have taken a lot of time off DJ’n this year and given I spent a shit load of cash the last few months, I decided to not take any days off this time round, so my holiday window ended up being very small, left Sunday morning, and come back Wednesday evening in time for NYE… Ah how things never quite go to plan. So arriving there, well, the airport was about as bad as the runway, small and ill equipped. My hotel annoyingly was unable to provide a transfer (yet has one leaving the hotel to the airport… go figure) so went with the common option of the tour group/bus (can’t remember their name but it seems everyone uses them, it’s the budget option…) and yeah, really regret that, the trip itself was ok, but the wait for the bus to fill up (an hour) the stop over at some shitty bus stop/cafe (30mins) the pissing around at the port (30-45mins) just killed it for me, esp given the trip going back from the hotel was barely 2 hours, the whole way! This was closer to 5 hours… and it just made me tired, by the time I arrived at the hotel, it was dark and I just wanted to sleep. Got room service, basic food options that were really shit to be honest then crashed.

 Fairways

Next day woke up early and had breakfast. The hotel/resort is a really nice place, has a bunch of villa style buildings housing the rooms scattered on either side of the mountains and golf course and looks very different to the rest of the Island. After breakfast I headed down to D-mall to check out the lay of the land, the beach, restaurants, clubs, shops etc and get some stuff from the supermarket.

Station 2 Boracay

After a few hours walking around it was back to the hotel and a whole afternoon chilling by the pool. One thing I noticed was there was staff, everywhere! It was kind of strange, it even seemed as if their families were there… The next thing I noticed was there was also Koreans, everywhere!!

Fairways Infinity Pool

Anyways the pool was really nice, was windy as hell on the beach but the pool was nicely sheltered, had a feed pool side and just relaxed, even had my towel stolen by a Korean girl who picked up the wrong one… (Even thou it was obvious it wasn’t hers… useless, even the pool side attendant cracked up and shook his head… Korean travelers huh lol) anyways afterwards went back to my room and chilled for a few hours before venturing down to D-mall to grab a feed and check out the nightspots. The feed was good but the service was rubbish with a smile, something I have come to expect in most Asian countries, they mean well but it really is nothing but organized chaos that works to a point, once that point is reached, it falls apart spectacularly. I mean sure, from local restaurants I don’t expect that kind of service you would expect in the west and it’s nice to dine in that more of a relaxed atmosphere but from upscale places that pass themselves off as quality service etc and restaurants at 5 star resorts, I expect a hell of a lot more than I often get. As for the food itself, I did stay away from the local cuisine, mainly because things like big ass steaks were cheap and Phillapino food is best cooked at someones house!

 Steak Feed at Epic

Anyways, the clubs, well it is kind of what you would expect, a smattering of night spots that are half bars, half that student style, loud get drunk with a couple of more ‘up market’ spots and a whole lot of in-between, there was a really nice balance. Most of the DJs were rocking laptops on what often looked like ‘worn’ gear (I can only imagine at how much it costs there to get good gear over there) The skill level was mediocre at best, I didn’t get to hear too many DJs but from what I did hear, I wasn’t impressed, a few were ok, playing out standard residency style sets with just standard mixing, a couple were terrible, jumping all over the place with little thought or effort put in and others were just chilled playing good tunes for the atmosphere. Anyways ended up chillin at one spot for a while and then headed home around 2ish. Good end to a good day.

 Fairways New Coast

The next day I was planning to go wind surfing, and finally managed to head out in the afternoon, the weather was total rubbish but managed to get a good lesson in and get the basics mastered, thou it didn’t help when switched instructors towards the end, the first dude was the owner and obviously knew what he was on about and he just made sense (he was Eastern European, forgot what country he was from) but he had to do some stuff so got given their normal instructor, a Philippino dude… my god, that dude made no sense, at all! Total fail! Anyways, had a good afternoon in what most would say were atrocious conditions (meh like a normal windy Welly day lol) and headed back to grab a feed and chill out at another restaurant, went back to my hotel room, was planning to head out but ended up crashing, thank god I did! Little did I know how much I was going to need that extra sleep energy the following day!!

 NZ Sheep

So my trip home, those who read my FB will already know the story, to make it brief, my flight was at 3.40, got to the airport at 2ish, checked in only to find out my flight had been delayed by oh, only 8 hours… hmm ok I can deal with that, looked around the airport to figure out basically all the flights had been delayed (the weather at this stage was fine… but the day before some idiot slid their plane off the runway closing the airport down) So vip lounge was full, I went across the road and chilled in a cafe all arvo/evening, when time came for my flight, delayed even longer, with no information about it at all, basically it left at 6am in the morning after hours of no information then finally getting a boarding call yet the plane was full when I got on it (guess I missed the Korean only boarding call) then waited another hour while paper work was being done… Seriously, again, shit service with a smile, Kalibo airport was a fucking slum with no one having a clue what was going on and no information being relayed at all. Total bullshit! I could write a lot more but meh, over it now, wouldn’t have minded if it wasn’t for the bullshit way they treated us. Anyways, in the end 26 hours later after leaving my hotel room I finally walked thru my door, missing my set for NYE and I think the first time ever I missed a set like that at the last minute (had a close call once with a flight delay but still made it with hours to spare) So that didn’t really sit well with me either. But at least I made it back and tried to enjoy the last few days of my holiday before going back to the grind.

Stuck in the Airport on NYE

So that’s it, my lovely winter vacation… will be thinking twice before going back to the Philippines again after that experience, basically that is the reason I hate flying on cheap ass airlines to small ass airports!
